The Mission Base
|
PMI's Mission Base is more than a physical building and is not just a house! PMI is building a spiritual stronghold against destruction in this area. This Mission Base is being built in a community that has some of the greatest needs in the entire country of Guatemala. There are many spiritual strongholds in the area and this is the reason for our location. We run many programs all of which use space. Having a base to work from will also benefit our flying ministry to various villages. We currently transport poor pastors from their homes to the big city where they rarely have a place to stay; yet they still go forward representing Jesus through evangelism. God is using this ministry to impact where no other missionary is reaching, but we are in need of help on a permanent basis. We are looking for an individual or a couple to commit a year (2008) to aid PMI in the Lord's work, specifically involving youth outreach and teaching programs. In order for the above to occur we must complete the Mission Base to accommodate volunteers, short-term missionaries, and for other ministry programs.
It is going to cost over $35,000 in materials and many volunteers to finish the four levels of the Mission Base.
The completion of the second floor roof ended our current phase of construction. The next phase (XI) is construction of the walls, electrical, plumbing, and (XII) roof for the third floor apartment (housing for short-term missionaries). This section of the phase will cost $6,000. Phases XI and XII must be completed before Phase X is finished because of water runoff in the rainy season. Completing Phase X will involve the two bedroom/bathrooms and the office/bedroom/bathroom (which are currently cement shells) on the second floor. Completion of Phase X will cost $5,000 (which includes materials such as toilets, sinks, tubs, windows, tile, etc.) and will bring two bedrooms and one office into action. Thus serving individuals that have completed drug/alcohol rehab, but require discipleship training and support; and poor pastors/missionaries that need a place to stay and prepare for ministry while visiting in the city. Phase XIII will realize a 4th floor dormitory, bathroom, and office space.
We are now preparing and planning for a team coming July 6th - 13th. We are still looking for volunteers from any church to join this team. Professional bricklayers would be a major asset to all 2007 teams.
The main need is prayer and God will provide. The construction of the Mission Base was God's heart in the beginning. Let's pray and see how God provides. Please join us:
- Pray for an increased number of participants for this years teams.
- Prayerfully consider joining future teams, organizing a future team, or committing a year in Guatemala to God and PMI.
- Tell others about PMI's ministry and solicit their support.
- Financially support those already committed to future work teams, or financially contribute toward construction materials through PMI directly (to designate funds to a specific project, such as Mission Base construction, include a note with your check stating your desired allocation).
For those of you who would love to join or support a team, but need more time to make arrangements and raise support there is a team coming in August and other potential leaders are looking for volunteers to come other months.
If you are interested in volunteering for any future teams, or organizing a future team the following will give you an idea of what is involved. Please get in touch with us at Jason@pattonministries.org.
Mission Cost
$500/person per week (includes construction materials, food, housing, electric, propane, transportation, community outreach) or $65 per day thereafter plus air fare. You will need extra spending money for one meal eaten out ($5-$8), for a departure tax of $3, and for any souvenirs you purchase (past guests have spent $40-$120, but that is totally up to you).
Typical Day
Come prepared for CIP (Change In Plans) - this is something that is unavoidable in Guatemalan Culture. Coming from a time oriented American Culture it is easy to become frustrated. Try to be flexible when plans need to be adjusted.

Construction
Many people think that they are not construction workers. Our volunteers have ranged in age from 16 to 65 and been of diverse backgrounds and physical fitness. There is so much that takes place during the building of a Mission Base that there is room for all to participate. Those with different abilities can paint, watch Zach and Seth, help prepare and cleanup from meals, repair things in the mission base, bring refreshments to the team. All can be a blessing if their heart is to help the Lord.
For those that can do normal construction, here is an example of the construction you would be involved with:
